Children are invited to become environmental champions at Southend Libraries
Southend libraries and The Reading Agency are excited to introduce Wild World Heroes, our Summer Reading Challenge for 2021 which this year runs from 17th July to the 28th August for children aged 4 – 12. There will also be an Early Years Challenge for children under 4 as part of the fun.
The ‘Wild World Heroes’ theme, in partnership with WWF, will encourage children to engage in fun a reading activity focused on environmental issues. The Challenge takes place in mythical Wilderville where the Heroes and their animal companions have to take action to save the natural world.
To make the challenge as safe as possible this year we have reduced the number of times families need to visit the library – at the beginning to collect a pack, and at the end to collect a certificate and medal.
A fold-out map will show six areas where the Heroes and their animal companions have to take action to save the natural world. As children read each book they will have a sticker to transform each area and make Wilderville a better, greener place to live. Children complete the Challenge by fixing each environmental problem with a transformation sticker. After reading 6 books, they are environmental champions and can collect a certificate and medal from your local library.
You can sign up in any Southend Borough library from 17th July. Just fill out a joining form, pick up a goody bag and checkout your books.
You can write a review or draw a picture and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll put them onto social media or our website.
Children can talk to library staff about their books by booking an appointment during August at any library in Southend.
Book a slot at your local library by calling 01702 215011.
Children who complete the Challenge by reading 6 books will be entered into a prize draw to win Adventure Island wristbands in September!
